While torrenting is most commonly associated with piracy, the truth is that torrenting itself is not illegal – it’s illegal only if you download copyrighted content.
You may not (and may not allow a third party to) copy, reproduce, capture, store, retransmit, distribute, or burn to cd (or any other format) any copyrighted content that you access or receive while using the hotspot shield software or service. It is a particular sort of virtual private network which is used for protecting the internet connections, specifically in unprotected software.
But because of those who pirate content, many countries and ISPs block torrent sites or fine those who download torrents. To access these sites, you need a VPN. With a VPN, you can change your location to a place where torrenting is allowed and download content.

5 Best FREE VPNs For Torrenting Safely
1. Hotspot Shield
How To Download Torrent Using Hotspot Shield For Windows 10
- 1 connection per account
- Blazing fast speeds
- 500 MB of data a day
Hotspot Shield is really popular – especially the free version. One of the main reasons for that is its super fast speeds, which are ideal for downloading. That said, the free version limits the amount of data you can use to 500 MB a day, which may not be enough depending on how big your torrent files are. But since it’s free, it’s worth giving a shot.
2. Hide.me
- 1 connection per account
- Only 3 servers to connect to
- 2GB data transfer limit
- Torrenting allowed
Hide.me is a fast VPN that has apps for all major platforms including iPhone and Android. In the free version, you can only connect to three servers and get 2GB per month. Hide.me also does not have OpenVPN support, which might be a disappointment for security-conscious users. Hide.me does, however, support PPTP, L2TP, SSTP, and IPSec. While you only get 3 servers to choose from, you can download torrents without any restrictions (except for the data limit). Find out what real Hide.me users have to say here.
3. Windscribe
- Unlimited connections
- Only 11 servers
- 10GB per month
Windscribe offers 10GB per month, which means you can torrent some of the bigger files. It has apps for all major platforms and comes with a strong ad-blocker. Unfortunately, the free version only has 11 servers, which might cause slower speeds. That said, Windscribe still has lots of fans.
4. Security Kiss
- OpenVPN support
- Only 300 MB per day
- 4 country locations
Security Kiss comes with several plans and the free one gives access to 4 locations. It supports OpenVPN on Windows and Mac, which is the preferred protocol. With a daily limit of 300 MB, there is not much torrenting you can do, but if you plan to download a few songs or lightweight apk files, it can be useful. 5. ProXPN

Hotspot Shield is throttling torrent downloads.
I bought a lifetime subscription of Hotspot Shield a few years ago. No matter what VPN server I switch too the speed is slow in the kibibyte range. When I disable the VPN my speeds increase dramatically to the megabyte range. I tried different torrent clients, Utorrent, BitTorrent, and qBittorrent and the results are the same. If I download a torrent that is not actually considered piracy my speed is fine, it's only the piracy torrents that are slow. Heck, I even have access to a private torrent website that mainly deals with 4K HDR content and my speeds is completely fine. But public torrent sites is what seems to be slow with Hotspot Shield. Can someone recommend a good cheap VPN that doesn't have a monthly subscription and instead offers a 1-time payment?
