I know how to make them no problem, but am under a crunch here and do not have time really and my old WinPE is not working too well. Does anyone know of where I can download. This article will guide you through the steps to creating your own bootable Windows PE disk. You will be able to use this disk to capture a custom WIM file that you will be able to use for deployment.

6 Steps total

Step 1: Install WAIK

Before we begin you will need to download and install the Window Automated Installation Kit (WAIK).

Step 2: Copype.cmd

Winpe

Now that you have WAIK installed click Start, All Programs, Windows AIK, and right click Deployment Tools Command Prompt and Run as administrator.

At the prompt we need to run the Copype.cmd script:

Copype.cmd
Choose the appropriate options for both: can be x86, amd64 or ia64. points to a local directory. I will be using x86 and copying to the C: drive.

The script will copy all the necessary files for the architecture specified.

Step 3: WinPE.wim

Next we need to copy the Windows PE base image (winpe.wim) to the Winpe_x86ISOsources folder, renaming it to Boot.wim in the process. We do this by running the command seen in the attachment.

Step 4: ImageX

Now that we have the base image ready we just need to add ImageX, which is the app that we will use for capturing our images.

We need to copy imagex.exe to our ISO folder:

copy 'C:program filesToolsimagex.exe' C:winpe_x86ISO

Again, choose the appropriate options for both. (for the sake of this guide) is Windows AIK. can be x86, amd64 or ia64.

Step 5: Creating the ISO

Now that we have the base image (boot.wim) and our capture app (imagex.exe) added to the ISO folder its time to create the actual ISO file.

Run the following command where C:winpe_x86ISO is the location of the source files, and C:winpe_x86winpex86.iso is the destination .iso file.

Oscdimg -n -bC:winpe_x86Etfsboot.com C:winpe_x86ISO C:winpe_x86winpex86.iso

Step 6: Done

Now if you navigate to C:winpe_x86 (or the destination specified in the previous step) you will see your Windows PE ISO waiting to be burned to a disk.

    I just want to say thanks. I spent a good chunk of time using the AIK yesterday and today before I came across this. I followed MIcrosoft's own instructions (using the Windows 7 AIK and the Windows 8 ADK) attempting to make a PE disc. The Windows instructions fail to mention anything about copying the winpe.wim and renaming it to boot.wim. This caused me hours of research, and it's just not clear anywhere. Thank you for this, I now have a working PE boot disk that doesn't bring up the 'BOOTMGR Not found' error!

    Just for convenience, these are the instructions that worked for me, for amd64:

    copype.cmd amd64 c:winpe_amd64

    copy c:winpe_amd64winpe.wim c:winpe_amd64ISOSourcesboot.wim

    copy 'C:Program FilesWindows AIKToolsamd64imagex.exe' c:winpe_amd64iso

    oscdimg -n -bC:winpe_amd64Etfsboot.com C:winpe_amd64ISO C:winpe_amd64winpe_amd64.iso

    I followed both the original instructions and Andrewdorre's instruction, both failed at the image creation stage due to Etfsboot.com not being found. After manually copying it the image creation works but after burning to disc I get a BOOTMGR not found error :( which is weird because BOOTMGR.EFI is visible in the root directory of the CD

    I can't seem to get the imagex right. I copied it into the ISO folder, created an ISO of that ISO folder, but then mounting it I can't find imagex!
    Mounting the ISO archive, I see the contents: BOOT, EFI, SOURCES, [BOOT], BOOTMGR, BOOTMGR.EFI, IMAGEX.EXE.

    It's for Win7 x64. I tried both x86 and amd64 imagex files.

    Thanks for this, the copying of Winpe.wim and renaming it boot.wim saved me, Microsofts Technet doc was missing this step.
